RIBI Young Chef Competition Success!

The winners of the School Heat, Josh Gilmore, of form 8U and Luc Field, of form 7F attended the next round of the cooking competition at Redbridge College recently.

 The judges chose to award Luc 2nd place. One of the judges, Lynden Davies, a professional chef who has cooked at No10 Downing Street, several premier league football clubs and Robbie Williams amongst others, declared Luc’s tandoori Pilaff dish ‘the tastiest main course of the day, superb’.

Well done to both boys for a fantastic achievement.

Christmas Carols

On Tuesday the 12th of December 2017 the music department conducted our annual ‘Charity Enfield Town Busking Tour’.  This is a tour consisting of playing in Palace Gardens for two hours (in the freezing cold) with the final hour (and the chance of some warmth) in Waitrose.

Every year the musicianship gets better, and every year the day on which we perfrom gets colder and colder.  Our boys were amazing!  Three hours in the cold to raise money for a good cause, bashing, plucking and blowing the christmas cheer into the hearts of the passers by.

We are please to announce that this year we raised a total of £513.70 for our chosen charity, MIND – a charity supporting mental health.  A huge thank you goes to Palace Gardens and Waitrose for supporting this event, the genorosity of the public in Enfield Town and to the boys themselves for all their hard work.

Christmas Concert 2017

The weather outside was frightful,

but the music was so delightful,

the fairy lights were all aglow

and the musicians twanged, hit and blowed.

Okay, creative use of grammar aside, this year’s Christmas concert was awesome!  The hall was packed with friends and families, students and teachers all excited to celebrate the festive season. We had over twenty different acts performing a whole host of genres including carols for audience participation.

The highlight of the show was a guest appearance from the Big Man himself… Santa!  We still don’t know where Mr Ness was during this guest appearance but we know he was very sad that he missed St Nick’s rendition of ‘Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho’.

Violin Masterclass

On Thursday 29th of November The EGS music department took a group of students to attend a violin masterclass with the amazing Jeanine Thorpe at Mount House School in Hadley Wood.

Our students had the unique chance to get 1:1 advice from Jeanine -within minutes of working with her, the students had noticeably improved and they each left the session with some important practice points.

The day was capped off by an incredible show of virtuosity, musicality and passion displayed by Jeanine in an evening recital.

As we returned to school we were all left with a sense of bemusement, enthusiasm and inspiration.

It was a trip we will not be forgetting for quite a while.

EGS Gardening Club

   

EGS Gardening Club is back up and running again for its second year and we are happy to welcome new members.  The club runs every Wednesday lunchtime at 1.30 and other activities are also run over the course of the year such as a visiting horticulturist, a chef’s workshop, a visit to an organic nursery and a trip to the local market to sell our produce.

Last year proved very successful with the students, who enjoyed selling their homegrown vegetables and plants at Enfield Town market. This year we are hoping to grow a healthy crop of herbs and vegetables to use in our practical food lessons, stimulating an interest in food provenance and an appreciation for the environment.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been preparing our raised beds and planting chard, kale and lettuce.  We have also been using the compost bin that we built last year to recycle our food waste from the Food Technology kitchen.  If you are interested in joining this club, please speak to Mrs Broadley, Mrs Turbett or Mrs Mittins.
