Physical Education

                  Department Overview

We became a Specialist Sports College in September 2010. The department consists of 8 staff that have a variety of roles in the school and the specialism. In our OFSTED (October 2010) inspection the following observations were made;

“The school has a strong history of sport and students take part in a wide range of sports. In the exemplary Year 7 student inter-form rugby competition, students played a big part in managing themselves very well and also in the management of the event, demonstrating a very cooperative culture and a high level of maturity and commitment, recording results as well as ensuring they were prepared for the many games, including warming up and team tactics. Teachers present refereed and coached the matches to ensure students enjoyed and progressed according to their own needs. The high level of activity and enjoyment demonstrated how well students adopt healthy lifestyles and take responsibility for their own health.”

The school enjoys extensive sporting facilities including 3 grass rugby pitches, 3 grass football pitches, a full size sports hall, a new Sports Hall complex with combined Fitness suite and studios, and a new 3G Artificial Grass Football Pitch Facility.

The department through the curriculum aims to provide students with a broad and balanced curriculum with pupils experience a wide range of team games, racket sports and athletic activities. This is supported with our outdoor education and fitness training modules that help pupils develop positive attitudes towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle in future life.

Students are encouraged to work hard within their lessons and expand their knowledge and skills in the vast extra-curricular programme. Extra-curricular provision is wide and varied and all students have the opportunity to participate at their own level in both competitive and recreational activities. Successes range from local and regional to national and even international.

The department offers examinations in GCSE Physical Education and additional vocational qualifications at Key Stage 4. We have a strong record at AS and A2 examinations at sixth form level and have an additional Level 3 BTec Sport course.

Sport provides the all pupils with the opportunity to find friendships and team spirit which extends throughout the school.
